Energy Costs Soaring

Lots of energy related discussion on the newswires this morning – ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous.

On one side of the energy scale we have useful comment on how we can individually save on our energy costs by switching suppliers or at the very least getting out of the ‘standard tariff’ merry-go-round. And on the other, we have reports of how the Hinkley Point C Nuclear project costs are soaring.

Apparently, the estimated cost of completing Hinkley Point C project has increased by £1.5 billion – and is now at a an overall estimated cost approaching £20 billion!! The project has already run into delays and I’m guessing there will be many more forcing the costs even higher. It does beg the question – is this money being well spent?

How much will one unit of electricity cost from this power plant by the time it is completed. And, in-light of all the recent cyber attacks – just how secure and safe will it be? I’m not against nuclear power generation – but it has to be safe and provide value for money, doesn’t it?
