The robots are coming

The robots are coming.

Autonomous vehicle anyone? Self-drive car hire that self-drives – literally. I might be jumping the gun a bit – but presumably this is the idea. How long will it be before we can hire a self-drive vehicle that drives itself. Waymo, the self-driving car unit of Google-owner Alphabet has done a deal with Avis Budget for the car rental firm to manage its fleet of autonomous vehicles. And, not to be outdone – Apple Inc. & Hertz have announced a similar set-up to manage a small autonomous fleet.

Haven’t I also heard that Uber is looking to develop a self-drive taxi too. The robots really are coming and soon, and to a town near you. Whatever next? Maybe you could have a take-away delivered? Oh hang on a minute, you can – looks like McDonald’s have teamed up with Uber to do just that – but not quite a driverless self-drive self-service delivery… just yet.

Presumably these autonomous vehicles can use a special road such as a ‘hyper-lane’.  Apparently, a US company is proposing special lanes on roads purely for self-driving vehicles. Now that’s real dedication to your fast food delivery. Other uses also available.
