The BREXIT Foresight Saga

Finance

It’s hardly surprising – to me at least, that we are so divided over BREXIT – after all, the referendum pretty much split the country 50/50 and that split is reflected in the ‘in-fighting’ we now see running right across our party politics. Call me old fashioned – but shouldn’t it be country before party?

If our illustrious political ‘people’ can’t work together or even individually for that matter without this continuous dissent, what hope do we have of managing a coherent joined up BREXIT strategy?

The prime minister called a general election in an attempt to bolster her mandate because of the incessant Westminster ‘in-house’ squabbling, didn’t she? It failed! And, where are we now…? In a much worse position than before – and our squabbling has become very public making it that much harder to negotiate a deal.

We are negotiating one of the biggest deals, if not the biggest the UK has seen, or is ever likely to see again this century and we are doing it from a position of weakness and not from one of strength.

To be perfectly honest, I thought we were doing just fine before the referendum as we were recovering well from the financial crisis. But now, we are expending so much energy on BREXIT rather than using that energy to get on with more important things – such as running the county!!

When the public voted, nobody spoke of a hard BREXIT, a soft BREXIT, the single market, the customs union, article 50 etc. None of these were mentioned. It wasn’t debated properly and we, the public, have not been very well informed and neither have the politicians it would appear!

When will our ‘political elite’ get a proper grip on BREXIT?
