Beginning of the end of the car internal combustion engine?

Volvo announced today (5th July 2007) that it intends to build all new cars from 2019 with electric motors. According to the statement released, Volvo cars will either be electric or hybrid from 2019. With Tesla announcing the new low cost model 3 this week, I have to ask the question, ‘is the tide finally turning?  Is it time to usher in the mainstream arrival of the electric car and say goodbye to the older generation of polluting combustion engine powered vehicles?’

Time for the electric car to go mainstream

Hopefully BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW and other big name car manufacturers will be making more announcements soon about their mainstream electric car credentials. I know BMW have the BMW i3, Nissan have the Leaf, VW the e-golf, Renault have the Zoe etc. etc. But it appears that these big car makers are taking longer than maybe they should to embrace the electric car potential. Just my opinion you understand.

Investment opportunity

I think that coming from an investment opportunity, I may need to look at companies involved in this quiet electric revolution. Maybe battery manufacturers or recycling companies will be a good place to start? The batteries have to go somewhere after they expire, don’t they? Presumably there are only so many times they can be re-charged? Let’s take a look – I’ll keep you posted.
