Google shop record fine

Google shop record fine.

It’s no secret Google has been fined 2.42 billion euros ($2.7 billion; £2.1 billion) by the European Commission. The commission said Google had abused its power by promoting its own shopping comparison service first at the top of search results.

If true – this potentially has such far reaching consequences, especially for users like you and me trying to get noticed. I was shocked, firstly at the blatant use of its dominance in the global market and by the sheer size of the fine. That was a 2.42 billion fine – wasn’t it!?

I guess it doesn’t really surprise me that much. For all of us using online advertising and paying for the privilege to get noticed – only then to be pushed down the ‘pecking’ order by the very company we are paying to help us get noticed – isn’t there something very wrong with that?

Are these companies becoming too dominant, too BIG and far too powerful? I want to be able to trust them…
